The Ten Commandments: "How Am I Supposed to Rest?"

Exodus 20:12

The What:

Remember the Sabbath to keep it holy (v.8).

“So He Himself often withdrew into the wilderness and prayed.”  - Luke 5:16

“Then the apostles gathered to Jesus and told Him all things, both what they had done and what they had taught. And He said to them, ‘Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.’”--------- Mark 6:30-31

“a rested, relaxed mind helps the body heal better,”

“most people have a better life perspective and are more motivated to achieve their goals after a vacation, even if it is a 24-hour time out,”  U.S. News

The How:

Plan one day a week to give to God instead of to your work (vv.9-10).

“Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it…But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.”

 - 1 Corinthians 9:24,27

The Why:

Keeping the Sabbath helps you identify with God’s purpose in the world (v.11).

“So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ.”

  – Colossians 2:16-17

Rest of salvation

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:28

Rest from the bondage of sin

“who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.” – 1 Peter 2:24

 Rest of victory over sins

“For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.  Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?” –      1 John 5:4-5

Rest from condemnation

“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh,” – Romans 8:1-3

Rest of guidance

“However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.” – John 16:13

Rest of provision

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”  - Matthew 6:33

 Rest of assurance

“For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” – Romans 8:38-39

 Rest of a fruitful life

“The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.”  - John 10:10

Rest of the human soul

“Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” – Matthew 11:29

 Rest of peace from anxiety

“Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” – John 14:27

 Rest of eternal life

“In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.” – John 14:2-3
